New Rome Bus Regulation for 2019 - It was recently announced that the city of Rome will be implementing new regulations for tourist bus access to the historical city center, including the areas near the Colosseum, Forum and Vatican City. These regulations are expected to take effect on Jan 1 2019. At this time, we are uncertain of the impact these regulations will have on our itineraries, but we are closely monitoring the situation and still planning to operate as usual. Due to the uncertainty of these new regulations, the means of transportation and order of your scheduled itinerary may be subject to change.

Accommodation Details:
May 5 departure will be accommodated at LaGare Hotel Venezia in Venice.

Entry Requirements:
Passengers traveling abroad require a passport valid for six months beyond their travel dates. All travelers are responsible to check if a visa is required for all countries on their itinerary. For visa information, check our Visas page.

The tour highlights include examples of Florentine painting of the masters, including Giotto, Botticelli, and Leonardo da Vinci. Continue to savor the grandeur of the iconic Trevi Fountain, and of course, toss in some coins! Then, onto the majestic Spanish Steps on the Piazza di Spagna, the longest and widest decorative steps in Europe. Spend the balance of your day at leisure, perhaps grab a cappuccino or gelato and indulge in the national pastime of people-watching.

DAY 11, Wednesday - Ancient Rome & Palazzo Colonna
This morning visit the mighty Colosseum, the largest amphitheater built in the Roman Empire that once seated over 50,000 spectators. Deadly combat of gladiators and wild animals were attended frequently by the rich, the poor and by the Emperor himself. Continue on to the legendary Roman Forum, the central area of the city from which ancient Rome developed. Next, view the triumphal Arch of Constantine, erected by the Roman Senate to commemorate his tenth year of leadership over the Eternal City. This afternoon, enjoy a visit to Palazzo Colonna, one of the oldest and largest private palaces of Rome. Its construction began in the fourteenth century by the Colonna family, who, after eight centuries, still reside there. The Galleria Colonna is a true jewel of the Roman Baroque style the construction of which required the expertise of Antonio del Grande, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Paolo Schor, and Carlo Fontana. During the visit, you will admire the works of Bronzino, Ghirlandaio, Tintoretto, Salvator Rosa, Guido Reni, along with many others. Visit the Apartment of Princess Isabelle, located on the ground floor of the palace which was built upon the foundations of the ancient Temple of Serapis. Here, the Colonna Princess preserves the apartment formally used by Princess Isabelle exactly as it was when she was still alive. Gondola Ride

One of the experiences of any Italian holiday is a Venetian gondola ride. For centuries, the traditional flat bottom boat has been a major means of transportation in Venice though its primary role today is to take tourists on rides. Gondoliers may seem like "rough-and-ready" characters, however they are actually highly skilled operators constantly working on the perfect balance of this watercraft. The profession, handed down from generation to generation, is regulated by a guild which issues a limited number of licenses to highly trained gondoliers to navigate the narrow spaces of the Venetian Canals. Explore part of the Grand Canal as well as some other hidden minor waterways. The gondola holds a maximum of six passengers. Please note that this is not a private gondola ride. Your gondolier will indicate the seating arrangements to balance the boat and you may not be seated next to your travel companions. Though you may envision the gondolier singing to you, there will only be a musician aboard one of the boats in your fleet of several different gondolas.

Pick-up details to be advised locally. Approximate tour duration is 30 minutes.

Terrific, as usual! We’re now in double digits with traveling with Gate 1! Shyam, our guide, was superb. He conveyed his love of country, gave a good explanation of each day’s activities, and made sure everyone in the group was satisfied. He’s a gem. Also, his helper, Rohan, was great, and the driver did a terrific job. We were very pleased with the hotel selections and the itinerary. We have 2 more tours scheduled with Gate 1 this year. Keep up the good work!

We are still talking about our wonderful Gate 1 trip, the things we learned, the people we met, and the fun we had. The more I think about this trip, the more I understand how difficult it is to plan an itinerary that pleases all on the trip. I must say that there was something for everyone ... we have no complaints. Our guides were all wonderful, especially Usa, our tour manager. She was efficient, pleasant, knowledgeable, and friendly for TWO WEEKS, and that is hard to do! I will have more thoughts once we get back to Houston, but at this point, I think we made a great decision to go with Gate 1.

As usual, Gate 1 did not disappoint. Sri Lanka was fabulous... with an abundance of friendly people, fabulous landscape and micro climates. It was rich in history and spirituality (Budha and Hindu temples everywhere) make this island very interesting to discover. I would be interested in expanding my exploration into the Northern part of Sri Lanka sometime in the future. I need to find out where in the world I will travel to in 2020...

Our trip was wonderful. The guides were terrific, the sites and experiences were outstanding and the pace of activities was perfect. The tour was extremely well organized and the details and directions throughout were very clear. We especially enjoyed engaging in hands on experiences with residents in some of the countries. In addition to being very informative about the places we were visiting and the life and history in each of the countries we visited, our guides were instrumental in making suggestions and helping us navigate our way around cities on our own leisure time.

This was our first Gate 1 Tour. We normally travel independently. We had a fabulous time doing the “Gems of South East Asia." We loved the small group (there were only 14 of us) and everyone got along really well. Panya did an outstanding job as our main tour guide. He went out of his way to accommodate everyone’s wishes and was very friendly, knowledgeable, thoughtful and compassionate. We had two vegans + a vegetarian + a non-fish eater in our group and he made sure everyone’s needs were taken care of at each restaurant. All the local tour guides were awesome too. We hope to use Gate 1 again in the future.

The coach was always clean and fresh flowers were put on our seats daily. I'm grateful that Gate 1 created this tour and did it completely in Jordan (instead of a combo with another country). It really gives the traveler time to fully enjoy and appreciate Jordan. Incredible doesn’t begin to describe it! From the moment we were met at the airport until the moment we left it just kept getting better. The accommodations were outstanding. The highlight though of course were the game drives. All of our drivers were so extremely knowledgeable which allowed us to track and see all of the Big 5. Don was our tour manager and he just made everything seem so effortless although I know there was a lot of coordination going on in the background. It won’t be our last visit to Africa or our last trip with Gate 1....thanks for the trip of a lifetime!

It was probably one of our best trips ever!! Morocco was absolutely beautiful. The size of our group was perfect. Our group itself were very cohesive, it was amazing. Our guide Mohammed was so kind and thoughtful that I think we all came back spoiled rotten. So much fun!

Simply wonderful. Nepal is bustling with activity, with smells, with life! Most enjoyable were the walkabouts through Bhaktapur, and Tharu village in Chitwan National Park which allowed us to chat with the locals and have a closeup look at the way they live. The dinner, home visits and the conversations about life in Nepal were priceless. Bhutan is more than amazing! It’s pristine environment and culturally rich history is fascinating. I loved the dress-up in traditional Bhutanese dres. The hike to Tiger’s Nest, is wonderfully rewarding ... At first sight, Tiger’s Nest was blanketed with clouds, but as the clouds lifted it was breathtaking and hastened our steps. Thanks to our guides Rajesh (Nepal), and Dawa (Bhutan) and our drivers who did a stellar job in ensuring everything went smoothly!

Discover Myanmar, September 2018

I have taken several Gate 1 trips and am one of your cheerleaders- and the Myanmar trip was one of my favorites. To begin with, Mojo was a fabulous tour leader. We all loved him. He was fun- has a great sense of humor- and patient. He was interested in getting to know each of us, was interested in our purchases and impressions. He always made sure that our meals were served perfectly ..... It was clear that people he worked with also enjoyed him- even the cattle remembered and responded to him! There were several of us who are older and have minor challenges with ambulation. Mojo bent over backwards to make experiences comfortable, to help us off and on buses and boats, and to discuss with us in great detail what was coming up, how long it would take to walk to a certain point, how best to dress, etc. When people decided not to do certain activities, he would chase after them to see if he could accommodate them in some way. He could not have been more dedicated to our comfort, safety, participation and enjoyment. I really loved all the craft work on this tour. We were given great demonstrations on how things were made, as people actually made the products in front of us. They were all gracious with our fascinated observation and generously allowed us to take pictures. Often it was Mojo himself giving the explanation- I think he can do all those crafts! I really enjoyed bringing home some lacquerware afterward. I loved every stop, but Bagan was so beautiful - the sunset was spectacular. .....I was so moved by the organization that was teaching young people to be chefs, and the cooking (and eating!) was fun and interesting- including bringing the apron and recipes home! Thank you again for a wonderful experience!

I have traveled on small group tours quite often, but this surpassed all expectations. Our guide in India was outstanding and the group I traveled with have all said they would travel again with her. I will certainly be booking through Gate 1 again.

I have traveled a lot but never with a tour. Our trip to Kenya was spectacular and unlike any place I have ever been. Our guide was Yusuf. We could not have had a better guide ... Yusef is a very special man who made the trip even more amazing. I fell in love with the people and their spirit, the land was so beautiful and wild, and of course the animals were so up close and free. This experience will be the one that will thrill me for a lifetime. The experience could not have been better. Thank you Gate 1 for just the greatest experience. Also thanks to our booking agent Donna for advice on the time of year to make the trip and invaluable tips. And thanks to Yusuf for teaching us the language, educating us on the animals and of Kenya, and for his gracious company and friendship.
