In a small town in the Bavarian Alps a play has been performed for almost 400 years to visitors and locals alike. This performance takes place once a decade in Oberammagau, Germany and is performed strictly only by citizens of the small town. Actors, a choir and an orchestra help portray the historical and accurate story of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The first play was performed in 1634 after an oath was made between the townspeople and God to end the suffering and death of the plague in their town in exchange for the play being performed. It is said that the plague did not kill one more soul after the deal was struck and the play has continued ever since.
The Passion Play Theatre has come a long way since 1634, where it was first performed on a cemetery next to the parish church, with only a small wooden construction. In 1830, the play was moved to its current location, in the northern edge of the village, where it housed around 4,500 spectators. The theatre was renovated again in 1890 when the stage and seats were put under a roof. In 1930, during its 29th installment an open air stage was constructed and extended. This shape has seen little change since then and is where the play takes place to this day! The theater seats around 4,500 people with comfortable seats on an incline, so that everyone gets a great view.
